A book ostensibly about matsutake, a mushroom nobody has managed to farm, that turns out to be about how value gets made at the ragged edges of an economy. Pickers in the clearcuts of Oregon, buyers in open-air tents, auction houses in Tokyo — and somewhere in the middle, a wild thing becomes a gift worth hundreds of dollars.
What I did not expect was how much of it reads as a method rather than an argument. Tsing keeps refusing to zoom out. She stays with the specific pine, the specific picker, the specific chain of hands, and the general case assembles itself behind your back.

Thirty seconds of audio every ten minutes, timestamped and filed. The hardware is unremarkable — a Zero 2 W, a cheap I2S mic in a baffle made from a yogurt container, a 10 W panel that only has to cover about six watts of draw. The interesting part is the classifier, which has to tell a chorus frog from moving water, and currently cannot.
Next up: a proper high-pass filter before anything reaches the model, and a nightly job that stitches the clips into a single compressed day so I can hear a whole season in four minutes.
